Decluttering your life
Benefits and why you should do it
So what?
We normally start our blog posts with outlining the benefits of whatever we are writing about. In this post, we’re going to get into the details of the benefits of decluttering and why we all should do it. We will follow it with a few posts on practical ways that you can declutter various aspects of your life such as decluttering the following areas:
- Kitchen;
- Bathroom;
- Desk;
- Drawer;
- Closet; and
- Bedroom.
Mo’ energy
Having more energy is a byproduct of decluttering your life and things that you surround yourself with. When you have clutter, things are not where they should be and will make you constantly make decisions. By decluttering, you will be:
- Less stressed from being able to relax more;
- Rested from having peaceful sleep from creating an environment that is conducive to sleep;
- Productive by minimising distractions around you so that you can focus on what matters; and
- Spending less time on doing what is required for you to have things;
- Organised by allowing you to find things quickly.
- All these things zap energy from you.
Mo’ money
Having things cost money. It’s not only the upfront cost of buying things but repairing, maintaining, storing, using, insuring, cleaning and simply owning things all cost money. Anything and everything you have require a certain amount of money to be spent on them. You will need less money by owning less of things. For things that you’ve already bought but are no longer valuable to you, give them away to others who will get value from them.
Mo’ space
Things take up space. Physical space that is. Decluttering and getting rid of things will give you more space. It’s simple mathematics and physics. More things = less space. Less things = more space. This applies to your mental space as well.
My experience
I’ve recently started going through all the things that we have accumulated in the last two years of living in our “new to us” home. Even though we culled quite a bit of junk last time we moved, we seemed to have accumulated more things. I’m going through each section of the house and reorganising and culling more stuff. Whilst I’m expanding energy by decluttering, I’m certainly gaining more space and being able to find things easily. Another immediate benefit that I noticed is that I’m not buying redundant things as I’m finding use of things that I already have.
