Paradox of choice (Part 2)

What is paradox of choice?

Do you regularly struggle through it? I certainly do

So what?

ICYMI – Have you ever found yourself overwhelmed by choices? Welcome to the paradox of choice. In a society where options are abound and decisions are abundant, it’s a modern conundrum that permeates your life in ways that you might not even realise. Say you are strolling down the aisle of a store, only to be paralysed by the amount of choices you have of cereal boxes or mindlessly scrolling through Netflix titles that paralyses you from asking a decision. The paradox of choice is an excess of choices that lead to stress, anxiety and, ultimately, dissatisfaction.

In this blog series, we are going to discuss the five strategies that you should implement in your life. Join us for the next few blog posts to deal with the hidden impact of choice overload and discover what you can do to lead a more balanced and fulfilled life.

Setting clear priorities

Prioritising can seem like a daunting task but such a skill can be cultivated with practice and patience. When you step back to assess your overarching values and goals, you will find what matters to you in the grand scheme of life. Break down these fundamental pillars into actionable steps instead of struggling with the overwhelming amount of choices and options around you that only distracts you. This way, you can navigate through the paradox of choice. One thing to keep in mind is that you need to maintain a realistic outlook by recognising what can be achieved within the limited timeframe you have, all the while adapting to changing circumstances. Developing this skill will allow you to allocate your time and resources effectively, reduce stress and foster a sense of purpose and satisfaction.

Limiting your options

Similar to setting clear priorities, adopting the practice of limiting your options start with assessing your overarching values and goals. Instead of prioritising your options and choices, this step involves filtering out extraneous choices. You can do this by creating a shortlist of options that meet your criteria. This list becomes your concentrated pool of choices which makes it easier to make a decision or two. It doesn’t mean that you’re settling for less. You are choosing the options that align best with your needs and preferences in a given context. By placing this limit, you are reclaiming your mental space, making decision-making a more efficient and less stressful process and renewing control of your life.
