Water kefir
And your microbiome
So what?
Your microbiome is a bustling community of microorganisms that are living inside your body. It’s made up of trillions of bacteria, viruses and fungi that call your gun home. These organisms play a vital role in your general health. Think of them as your body’s health squad, influencing everything from immunity to digestion and mental wellbeing.
In this post, we’re going to discuss the ways that water kefir can help you with your microbiome.
What is it?
Have you heard of water kefir? I’ve come across kombucha a number of times but never had heard of water kefir. Similar to kombucha, it is a sparkling probiotic drink made by combining water kefir grains, sugar and water. Fermenting this mix for 24 to 48 hours results in a refreshing drink that is fizzy , non-dairy and delicious.
Probiotics
This fizzy, fermented drink is packed with beneficial probiotics which are the friendly bacteria that promote a balance in your gut. Drinking or sipping on water kefir introduces these good bacteria into your body, aiding digestion and enhancing your overall gut flora.
Alternative
Water kefir is a great alternative to sugary sodas that are full of excessive sugars and empty calories. They not only lead to rapid spike in blood sugar levels, drinking them contributes to weight gain and increases the risk of type 2 diabetes.
My experience
I’ve been drinking water kefir for the last two months. The biggest benefit for me has been regular bowel movements. Having a cup of water kefir every morning makes me go to the toilet like clockwork whereas I was going every two to three days.
What now?
- Come back next week to find out about its tangy cousin, milk kefir.
