Milk kefir

Milk kefir

and your microbiome

So what?

ICYMI – In our previous post, we briefly talked about your microbiome. Your microbiome is a bustling community of microorganisms that are living inside your body. It’s made up of trillions of bacteria, viruses and fungi that call your gun home. These organisms play a vital role in your general health. Think of them as your body’s health squad, influencing everything from immunity to digestion and mental wellbeing.

In this post, we’re going to discuss the ways that milk kefir can help you with your microbiome.

What is it?

There are a ton of probiotic-rich options that are available in your grocery or health store. Milk kefir definitely stands out as a nutritious and yummy option. It is a fermented milk drink that contains a combination of arterial and yeast cultures. Depending on the combination and its origin, it has a varying degree of tanginess and effervescent extrudes. Some of the potential benefits including aiding in digestion, strengthening your immune system and enhancing nutrient absorption. Regular consumers use it in smoothies and salad dressing as well as even make it into cheese.

Origin

There are a few different stories of where milk kefir originated but one compelling one is that it traces back to the Caucasus Mountains in Eastern Europe. The world derives from the Turkish word “keyif” which translates to “feeling good”, referring to the feeling that you get after consuming it. It is known to have been discovered over a centuries ago when Caucasus shepherds accidentally fermented their milk in leather pouches. This way of fermenting milk quickly spread through Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

My experience

My family and I have been drinking milk kefir in the last 3 months. FOr me, I’ve noticed very regular bowel movements a month into drinking it and less food sensitivities. Our kids have noticed easier time going to the toilet. At the end of the day, drinking kefir has become a ritual, a bonding moment, which trumps all the benefits that come with it.
