Defining your own rich life
So what?
After reading I will teach you to be rich by Ramit Sethi, we’ve been pondering about what it’s like to live a “rich life”. We posted about wealth and being rich here where we defined them. ICYMI, being wealthy and rich allows you to:
- Spend time and money on things that matter;
- Set and achieve more meaningful goals; and
- Focus on what’s important.
The key aspect of defining your own rich life is personalising to your wants and needs and adjusting to your situation and circumstances. Below are examples where you should look to personalise and adjust your own rich life.
Your mind, body and soul
- Maintaining a healthy lifestyle
- Having a good, balanced diet
- Going to the gym
- Attending fitness classes
- Practicing religion and spirituality
- Taking breaks and days off from work or business
- Shopping for clothes and shoes
- Getting pampered
- Attending self-improvement events and retreats
Family and friends
- Spending time with them whenever you want
- Helping them when they are in need or just because
- Going on regular staycations or holidays
- Taking them out to dinner
- Buying them drinks
Community
- Volunteering at your local organisations
- Donating money to your favourite charities
- Mentoring youths and young adults
- Giving to Vinnies or Salvos
Work
- Taking time off without undue pressure
- Flexible working arrangement
- Working from home when desired and required
- Getting fairly compensated
My experience
Before I did the “Ideal day” exercise we mentioned in our post What do you want in life?, I was always chasing the rich life. I never clearly defined what success and rich life for me looked like. Once I personalised the rich life to my own wants and needs, I realised that I was already living the rich life in many aspects. As we’ve previously discussed, being rich is a state of being, not just about wealth. Realising, recognising and accepting this allowed to be more present rather than aimlessly chasing after the rich life.
What now?
- Have you done the “Ideal day” exercise?
- If not, why not have a go?
- If so, how close or far are you from living your rich life? What will you do to get to that point?
