Mannerism in today’s society
The importance of good manners in life
So what?
Manner is defined as the “mode of action; way of performing or doing anything” and is the characteristic of how you act and behave. Being good mannered is the foundation to success in all aspects of life as you can benefit from good manners as a child and as an adult.
First impression
First impression takes just a few seconds at most. Whenever someone meets you or even sees you for the first time, the other person evaluates you based on your mannerisms, demeanour, appearance whether you like it or not. It is almost always irreversible and sets how your relationship with that person will form. And future relationships bring opportunities in all aspects of life. Your manners are one of the first things to be noticed. Specifically, people will form an opinion on how you behave and carry yourself with. Meeting people can be intimidating for introverts. Displaying good mannerism eases the burden within social settings.
Opportunities
Life is full of surprises. All aspects of life involve people. People that you encounter in life bring opportunities. These opportunities are unpredictably and unforeseen which can be life changing if they come at the right time and place. People not only notice you being mindful of others, your mannerism affects how they feel about you. Those with good manners and that are polite are the first ones to be thought of and spoken to when opportunities come along. You never know who you will run into and who that person turns out to be, now and in the future.
My experience
When I started my accounting career in Canberra, I attended an event that was hosted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. I met and spoke to a lady who turned out to be a partner at one of the largest accounting firms that later became the managing partner for the Canberra office. When I was looking to move to another accounting firm seven years later, I reached out to her hoping that she would remember me but definitely was not expecting her to. I made such a good first impression that she remembered me and I ended up with a new career without going through the application process.
What now?
- Has being good-mannered brought you any opportunities in life?
- If you had to choose between being good-mannered and rude, what would you choose?
- See how important it is?
