Decluttering your bathroom
Getting rid of the junk in your trunk
So what?
ICYMI – our previous post outlines the benefits of decluttering. In summary, the benefits are having more money, time and energy.
Clean slate
Bathrooms seem to be one of those place where random things end up. Because of this, the best way to approach decluttering your bathroom is to start with a clean slate. If you haven’t done this recently, you’re likely to have a ton of junk in your bathroom. Go through every single item in your bathroom and create four piles: keep, donate, cull and relocate. As you go through each item, place them in its respective pile. Keep the items you need, use or love. Donate the items that you don’t use but others may. Cull the items that no one will need or use. Relocate the items that you love, use or need but don’t belong in the bathroom.
Around the basin
Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a double basin, extra wide countertop with ample space to do get ready or wind down for the day. If you’re like us (i.e. a family of four with a single basin), you need to limit what you have on your countertop to no more than 10 things. Once you have decluttered your bathroom, take a look at your keep pile. Take out 10 things that you use on a daily basis. Things like toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, brush, razor and lotion come to mind. Only these items are allowed to take precious space on your countertop. Make sure you stick to this rule. Otherwise, you will end up with junk everywhere and will be difficult to keep tidy and clean the area. You can use something like this to organise the 10 things to keep things together and make cleaning even easier.
My experience
My wife is in charge of the bathroom and our supplies of toiletries, hygiene and oral products. I buy them but she organises them. She has designated spots and containers for things we use daily, occasionally and rarely as well as for extra supplies that we have at home. Organising things by the frequency of use has helped us keep our bathroom and cupboard clean with minimal effort.
What now?
- Is your bathroom a big pile of dump where everything seems to end up?
- Start on a clean slate to get decluttered.
